Captivate Research
Leading major discoveries to decrease the severity and mortality of pneumonia.
Our Vision
Global Reach and Cure of Pneumonia
Our studies have made important breakthroughs to understand causes and treatment of community-acquired pneumonia.
Our Research & Researchers
We have world-class Canadian and French researchers working together as a team.
Community-Acquired Pneumonia
CAP is the most common type of pneumonia that occurs outside the hospital and in the community.
Risk Factors & Prevention
Pneumonia can affect anyone, mostly children less than 2 years of age and people over age 65.
Diagnosis
Your doctor or care practitioner will take your history, do a physical exam, Chest X-ray, Pulse oximetry and more.
Treatment
Most people are treated at home and specific treatments depend on the type and severity.
Post Pneumonia
Pneumonia survivors often go on to suffer chronic problems with their lungs and heart.
Why is it getting worse?
Poor health, crowded hospitals, and vaccine gaps worsen pneumonia impact.
Why & How to Become Involved
Our research focuses on patients already hospitalized with pneumonia.
Why Are We Studying CAP?
- Pneumonia is the commonest life-threatening infection.
- Pneumonia is a leading cause of hospitalization and death.
- Pneumonia affects children and is the commonest cause of death of children less than five years of age.
- To develop effective vaccines that prevent the disease and reduce its prevalence.
- Mortality is less than 1% in mild cases - patients who only need outpatient treatment.
- Death may be caused by overwhelming infection and/or progression to sepsis.
- Pneumonia has significant healthcare costs.
- During the COVID pandemic, millions of people died from CAP caused by the COVID virus.
